Celebrating 40 Years of Long Homestead Stewardship
Wednesday, October 13, 2021, 7 PM
First United Methodist Church,
Main & Tremont Streets, North Tonawanda, NY
Free & Open to the Public. Bring a friend!

For over forty years, this Society has worked to share the historic Long Homestead, the oldest house in Tonawanda, with the public. Following three years of restoration work, the Homestead was opened for tours on June 1, 1980. Since then, countless tours have been conducted & events held. All have been done by dedicated Society volunteers. Recently, upgrades have been made to the facility. Hot water has been installed in the working kitchen & rest rooms. The kitchen has been outfitted with new cabinets & appliances, bringing it into the 21st century. The master bedroom curtains & carpets in the first floor rooms have been replaced after forty-one years of wear.

On October 13, Carole Barnard will present a pictorial history of the Homestead’s transformation from Jay’s Log Cabin, a local tavern, to an early 1800’s residence. Photos of various rooms, pre-restoration & current, will demonstrate the remarkable changes which have taken place. The restoration is a stellar example of what can be accomplished through cooperation between City government & Society members. Under the guidance of Marge Bellinger, Tom Mileham & Willard Dittmar, the house again became a gracious 19th century family home.

In addition to the virtual tour offered that evening, docents will be at the Homestead to welcome those wishing a personal view of the site. Parking is always a problem so a shuttle will be available to ferry participants back & forth across the Canal. If you wish to see the house that evening, please contact Carole Barnard (716-913-3452 or blonghstd24@gmail.com.

Tours will be offered by reservation only.
