Shane E. Stephenson has worked for 18 years in Workforce Development as a Business Services Specialist spending time on Buffalo’s East Side working with businesses and their workforce needs. He also has served four years at the Buffalo History Museum as a part time Library and Archives Technician in the Research Library and has owned and operated a small business, Archives in the Buff, archiving family and small business records for 3 years.
Mr. Stephenson has also assisted Forest Lawn prepare archives for the move into their new Wendt Archive Center, curated three exhibits for the Association for a Buffalo Presidential Center, and archived the records of many Buffalo-area families and businesses.
Buffalo’s Industrial History has been Shane Stephenson’s long time passion, but he has only recently felt he found a story of an under-documented section of Buffalo. His PowerPoint program, entitled Buffalo’s East Side Industry is based on his recent Arcadia Images of America book of the same title and reviews 141 businesses that were, or are still, located on the East Side. The 204 images included in the book represent an immensely diverse industrial base when the East Side was the ethnic, cultural, and manufacturing center for Buffalo and Western New York. Mr Stephenson will discuss some of these businesses in detail, talk about the growth of industry in Buffalo and, if time allows, a little about the process used to write the book. Copies of his book will be available and a brief book-signing will follow the program.
Shane Stephenson is currently working on his second Arcadia Images of America series book about Buffalo’s famous Larkin Soap Company. He has also recently joined the Historical Society of the Tonawandas and has been discussing project development in the area of archiving and future historical articles for THE LUMBER SHOVER.
